SIOR’s New
Jersey Chapter
helps neighborhood project through
efforts with Habitat for Humanity
A sunny morning on June 21st was the perfect setting as
22 well intentioned SIOR’s came together to assist in a
neighborhood development project in Somerset, New
Jersey. In an effort to help revitalize a neighborhood,
the NJ Chapter of SIOR’s collaborated with Habitat for
Humanity to bring expertise and assistance to a
four-unit housing development currently underway.
Greg Irving, 2008 President of SIOR New Jersey, took
pride in organizing this event. It is part of this
year’s theme of ‘giving back to the community’. Greg
Irving has consistently recognized the many SIOR’s that
volunteer their time and money as well as the
developers, owners and corporate groups who help by
giving back so much to our various communities.
Greg Irving said, “This was a VERY special day! We put a
lot of time and effort into organizing this effort to
find out that it was something of tremendous value.
Everyone we asked for assistance was very cooperative.
This will be an annual event going forward on our SIOR
agenda. It is really terrific to see the desire by so
many SIOR Chapter members to help those in need!”
Greg Irving continued, “Our SIOR volunteers provided a
well organized day of skills and labor to this project.
While we provided the individual efforts, we never
forget the donors whom supplied money and materials to
build these Habitat houses. Partnerships like SIOR
invest hundreds of hours of labor through "sweat equity"
into building homes for those in need.
One of the volunteers, Mr. Charles Parmelli, 2008 NJ
SIOR Treasurer, said, “We did not need any special
construction skills to volunteer for Habitat for
Humanity, although being able to pound nails is a plus.
We were working side-by-side with our SIOR team members
and we are glad to assist in the well being of the
inevitable owners of these homes. In our case, the SIOR
community pitched in with a myriad of efforts and skills
that all led to a wonderful day”.
Habitat for Humanity is an international, nonprofit
housing organization, working in partnership with
families in need of decent shelter and with supervised
volunteers, using largely donated materials, to build
homes in the U.S. and around the world. For more
